"HELP!! My Child is Struggling!":
Tips for Parents of Struggling Students – From a Former Struggling Student.

Watching your child struggle in school is tough. As parents, we want to see our kids feel successful and confident, but when challenges arise, it can be hard to know how to help. I understand these ups and downs intimately, both as a parent and as a former struggling student, as well as being an experienced special education teacher.

Most people are surprised to learn that I too was a struggling student. I remember asking my mom why I couldn’t read like my friends; I dreaded popcorn reading time at school. I would try my best to read ahead and sound out unfamiliar words, just in case I was called on. Unfortunately, my efforts often fell short. My anxiety and difficulty with phonetic decoding left me fumbling through each sentence. I honestly hated reading because it felt like an impossible task. The determination of my parents, who were constant advocates in the school, was crucial in helping me get the support I desperately needed. I was a struggling student, well-behaved but quickly being passed along because of it.
Parental engagement in a child's education can make a significant difference between a student reaching proficiency and sliding through on autopilot. That’s why I started Treehouse Learning and Development—to help kids build the skills and confidence they need to succeed while providing parents with a trusted partner in the process.
Here are some ways you can support your child, along with how Treehouse can work with you to help them thrive both academically and emotionally.
1. Identify What’s Behind the Struggle

Tip : Every child’s learning journey is different, so start by looking for patterns. Maybe they’re frustrated with math, or they’re feeling overwhelmed with reading or keeping up in class. This can give you clues on how to best support them.
How We Can Help : At Treehouse, we take the time to assess your child’s strengths and growth areas in literacy and math. This lets us create tutoring sessions that focus on their unique needs, helping them build confidence step by step.
2. Teach Skills Beyond Just “Learning the Material”
Tip: For many kids, it’s not just about understanding the content. Things like staying organized, managing their time, and breaking down big assignments can be a huge hurdle. Help them set up a simple routine or create a visual schedule they can follow.
How We Can Help: Our tutors are experts at weaving executive function skills into tutoring sessions. We don’t just cover academics – we help your child learn strategies for organization, time management, and tackling assignments without feeling overwhelmed.
3. Set Up a Routine That Works for You and Your Child

Tip: Routines can make all the difference when it comes to consistency and motivation. If possible, set a time each day for homework, then some downtime, and a chance to unwind.
How We Can Help: Our after-school programs give kids a structured environment
to finish their homework, play, and join in on fun mini-lessons in literacy, STEM, and social-emotional skills. The balance helps them academically and lets them relax and enjoy learning.
4. Encourage a Growth Mindset
Tip: Celebrate the effort, not just the end result. Remind them that everyone faces challenges in learning, and that every small step forward counts.
How We Can Help: At Treehouse, we’re all about celebrating progress. In both private and small-group sessions, we use growth mindset techniques to build resilience and make learning feel like an accomplishment, not a chore.
5. Consider Professional Support
Tip: When you’re feeling stretched trying to help at home, bringing in an experienced tutor can make a big difference. It’s a relief to have a partner in helping your child gain the skills and encouragement they need.
How We Can Help: Our tutors are certified teachers, with experience supporting students who learn in all kinds of ways. We offer both private and small-group tutoring, and our approach is designed to help students at every level, with the flexibility to fit your family’s schedule.
6. Stay Connected with Teachers and Support at School

Tip: Keep the lines of communication open with your child’s teachers. It’s okay to
reach out for updates, request resources, or check in on what might help them feel more comfortable in class.
How We Can Help: I know the value of teamwork from my own time as a special education teacher, and at Treehouse, we’re happy to collaborate with your child’s teachers. We’re here to reinforce what’s happening in the classroom and create consistency across all areas of learning.
