2024 Summer Learning Program Yields Positive Results in Literacy Development
Treehouse Learning and Development’s summer literacy program has wrapped up, and we're thrilled to share the positive outcomes we've seen in our students' reading and writing skills. Our tailored approach, focusing on different age groups, yielded impressive results.
During the five-week summer learning program,
students participated in intensive literacy
instruction, which was structured to support growth
in key areas such as word study, sight words, oral reading, and writing. Pre- and post-assessments were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the instruction and to track the students’ progress across
three age groups: ages 6-8, 9-11, and 12-14.
Younger Students (Ages 6-8): Building a Strong Foundation
For our youngest learners, the focus was on fundamental literacy skills like word study, sight words, and oral reading. Pre- and post-assessments revealed a remarkable jump in the class average, from 16% to 74%, indicating a strong response to the structured literacy instruction. Word study skills showed the most dramatic improvement. This success can be attributed to the effectiveness of phonics instruction and word recognition strategies.
Older Students (Ages 12-14): Significant Writing Growth
The oldest group of students also focused on writing, and here we saw significant growth. Many students progressed to higher proficiency levels, demonstrating mastery of critical writing skills such as structure, clarity, and content development. This improvement reflects the success of the program’s writing strategies.
🎉 Areas of Success 🎉
Dramatic Improvement in Word Study: The scores increased from 82.8/120 to 88.8/120, showing substantial progress in students’ ability to analyze and break down words. This improvement demonstrates the effectiveness of phonics instruction and word recognition strategies.
Consistency in Sight Words: High scores in sight word recognition were maintained (19.5/25), suggesting that the instruction effectively reinforced students' ability to recall and recognize high-frequency words.
Overall Growth: The jump from 26% to 74% class average reflects an impressive response to the instruction, showing that the structured approach to literacy instruction was impactful for most students.
Young learners (Ages 6-8):
Building Strong Readers
Our youngest students made significant strides in word study a critical foundation for reading. Through engaging phonics activities and targeted instruction, their word recognition skills blossomed. We also saw consistent performance in sight word recognition, a key element of reading fluency
Older Students (Ages 9-14):
Writing with Confidence
For our older students, the focus was on writing development. We're proud to report that many students showed marked improvement in their writing abilities. They gained confidence in
expressing their ideas clearly, organizing their thoughts effectively, and using more sophisticated language.
